The Cahon is an all wood drum.  They have a wood "skin" that gives them a deep rich tone with a penetrating note.  One time Conrad was playing his cajon at a drum circle in a hollow by a hill.  A person coming over the rise was curious about the unique drum sound that carried above all of the djembes and congas.  She was amazed when she discovered it was a cahon.  The cahon pictured the first drum Conrad ever made.  Now, after hundreds of ashikos, djembes and djunjuns it is still one of his favorite drums.  Cahons are available in a variety of shapes and sizes, special orders are available.
