Conrad at Spirit in the Wood has invented tools to cut 3 dunun from a single log. He cuts a smooth core out of the log and the core shell becomes the largest drum. This process is repeated to make the 2 smaller drums in the dununba set. This results in beautiful matched drums and makes maximum use of the old trees. It is important that the local trees he uses are being cut for other reasons by their owners. Short clear sections of log that are to short for lumber are saved from the firewood market and turned into works of art.

Spirit in the Wood Dununba are made with several shell constructions. hollowed log, staved (like a barrel), or wood ply layup. The solid log and staved drums are the heaviest and sound the best. The wood ply layups are lighter and less expensive and very loud. Dununba are made in 3 general sizes;
Kenkeni are the smallest and tuned to the highest note. They are the timekeepers in a djembe ensemble
Sangban are the mid-sized drums. They are the heart drums and carry the central rhythm.
Dunun are the largest and used to accent and punctuate the rhythm cycles.
